The 1999 English Base Set was printed in three waves. They use the same artwork and numbering, so telling them apart comes down to three small details.

How to check, step by step
- 1Look for the stampBottom-left of the illustration window. If the “Edition 1” icon is there, it's 1st Edition. If not, continue.
- 2Look at the art box shadowTilt the card. Unlimited cards have a soft grey shadow along the right and bottom edge of the picture frame, making it look raised. Shadowless (and 1st Edition) cards have a flat frame with no shadow.
- 3Sanity-check the copyright lineShadowless cards read “© 1999 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK”; a “1999-2000” date means it's an Unlimited reprint.
- 4Check the HP font (holos)On Shadowless holos the HP is a thinner font and set slightly left of where Unlimited places it. Useful as a tiebreaker.
The same logic applies to Jungle and Fossil (1st Edition vs Unlimited) — but those sets have no true “Shadowless” run; early Unlimited copies with the wrong wingspan / no set symbol on the reverse are the sought-after “error” variants instead.
Why the gap is so big
1st Edition print runs were tiny and brief; Shadowless ran only a few weeks before the Unlimited reprint took over for years. Fewer copies plus the highest collector demand of any modern-era set means a PSA 10 1st Edition holo can trade for many multiples of the Unlimited equivalent.
